How does network congestion change the cost of swapping out of Bitcoin

Network congestion raises the cost of swapping out of Bitcoin because it forces you to pay a higher transaction fee to get your swap processed at all. When the Bitcoin network is busy, miners prioritize transactions with higher fees, so your swap will stall indefinitely if you underpay.

You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.

The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. teslaai2023.site never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.

Why congestion affects costs specifically

A swap out of Bitcoin is not a single trade. It is a sequence: you send Bitcoin from your wallet to the exchanger’s address, the exchanger waits for confirmations, then they send you the other asset. The first step - sending Bitcoin - is subject to Bitcoin’s own fee market.

Bitcoin blocks have limited space. Each block can hold about 2,000 - 3,000 transactions, depending on size. When more people want to transact than fit in the next few blocks, a bidding war begins. Your wallet estimates a fee based on current network conditions. In calm periods, a low fee gets you into the next block. During congestion, that same fee may leave your transaction unconfirmed for hours or days.

The exchanger will not act on an unconfirmed transaction. Most require at least one confirmation, some demand three or more. Until those confirmations arrive, your swap is stuck. You cannot cancel and retry easily, because the Bitcoin you sent is already broadcast. You can either wait - or use a Replace-by-Fee (RBF) feature to bump the fee higher. RBF lets you rebroadcast the same transaction with a larger fee attached. That costs you more, directly.

How much more can it cost

Normal Bitcoin transaction fees vary wildly. In 2023, they ranged from under $1 to over $30 per transfer. During peak congestion events - such as the Ordinals inscription craze in early 2023 - median fees exceeded $30 for days. A swap that would have cost $2 in fees on a quiet Sunday could cost $40 on a busy Tuesday.

The fee you pay is not a percentage of the swap amount. It is a flat fee per transaction, regardless of whether you are swapping $100 or $100,000. That means congestion penalizes small swaps disproportionately. A $5 fee on a $100 swap is 5%. The same $5 fee on a $10,000 swap is 0.05%.

Indirect cost: slippage and delay

Congestion does not only raise the explicit fee. It also introduces timing risk. While your Bitcoin transaction sits unconfirmed, the price of the asset you are swapping into can move. If you are swapping Bitcoin for a stablecoin, a few hours of delay might cost you nothing. If you are swapping into a volatile altcoin, the price could shift 5 - 10% before the exchanger credits you. The exchanger locks the rate at the moment they see your first confirmation, not when you hit send. That gap is your risk.

Some exchangers adjust their quoted rates during network congestion to account for this risk. They may widen the spread - offering you less of the other asset - to protect themselves against the chance that your transaction takes longer than expected. This is a hidden cost, not shown as a fee but embedded in the exchange rate.

What you can do, and what you cannot

You cannot avoid congestion entirely. It is a feature of Bitcoin’s design. You can check mempool congestion tools before starting a swap. If fees are spiking, waiting a few hours or a day often saves you money. Some wallets let you set a custom fee; aim for the 25th - 50th percentile of recent fees, not the minimum.

Do not assume that paying the highest fee guarantees instant confirmation. Even high-fee transactions can be delayed if a block is unusually slow to arrive. But in practice, paying the median fee usually gets you into the next 1 - 3 blocks.

Relationship to the hub page

For a fuller picture of how Bitcoin’s design complicates swaps, read the hub page titled "Swapping Bitcoin for other assets." It explains why the one-way nature of Bitcoin transfers makes every swap a multi-step process, and why congestion is only one of several cost factors you face.
